Bob Costas on calling Yankees-Guardians, his first full playoff series in 22 years: ‘I’m really excited’

Bob Costas called every pitch last night. MLBAlex Rodriguez, a 24-year old shortstop for the postseason series, was 24 years old Seattle MarinersOrlando (El Duque Hernandez), was creating magic for the New York Yankees, and “Meet The Parents” was the No. 1 movie in America.

So, yeah, it’s been a bit.

TBS will be the exclusive broadcaster of the 2022 American League Division Series. Costas, joined by Ron Darling analyst and Lauren Shehadi reporter, will be present at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday to cover Game 1 of the Yankees – Guardians ALDS. After calling that series, Costas will serve as the onsite studio host (alongside Pedro Martinez, Jimmy Rollins and Curtis Granderson) for TBS’ coverage of the American League Championship Series. (Brian Anderson and Jeff Francoeur will host the Mariners-Astros series. Matt Winer will be hosting it.

Costas was a guest this week on my sports media podcast and we had a wonderful conversation about a variety topics, including how he sees himself at age 70 as a baseball broadcaster, and whether network broadcasters are able to be critical. NFLOwners, his thoughts about Vince McMahon and Jack Nicholson’s refusal to interview him during the NBA Finals. You can listen to the entire conversation by clicking on the link at the end of this Q&A, which has been edited for length.

Why is baseball such a passion that it seemed you could give up the NBA and NFL?

Not only to give up the NFL, I initiated giving up the NFL twice during the course of my career and only returned to it when NBC got “Sunday Night Football” because of my relationship with (former NBC Sports head) Dick Ebersol.
