Oleksandr Usyk casts doubt on possible Tyson Fury fight in 2023 as heavyweight champion considers dropping back down to cruiserweight saying ‘It’s really hard to eat all the time’

Oleksandr Usyk, the unified heavyweight boxing champion, said he was considering moving down to the cruiserweight weight division.

The Ukrainian has just come off two incredible victories. Anthony Joshua, which saw him win and then defend the WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight world titles.

Usyk has all the major heavyweight belts, except one

This seemed to set up a mouthwatering clash with Tyson Fury who holds the WBC Heavyweight title, which is the only major in the division.

However, Usyk He declared himself ineligible for the rest of 2022 due to injury, and ‘The Gypsy King’ went looking for an alternative opponent to face later this year.

Joshua was expected to fight but The snow meltedFury is not yet certain who Fury will face, but he is ready to fight at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on December 3.

Now Usyk has revealed that he’s considering returning to cruiserweight. This means that Fury might never see him again.

Although he insists that it is easy to compete at heavyweight, the Ukrainian claims that he struggles to consume enough food to maintain his weight.

“I was thinking about returning to cruiserweight and getting a few more of the world belts,” Usyk said in a recent interview with Parimach.

“You know, being a heavyweight means you have to be really heavy. You have to eat lots. It’s not hard to fight with these giants, but it’s really hard to eat all the time.

“And now I work much more than I did as a cruiserweight, particularly in the training camps. I had to swim ten kilometers and train hard. At this point, I want to take a break and rest.

“A half of a year of training is hard work. I didn’t see my family for such a long time, I didn’t see my wife, children or anyone.”

Before his move to heavyweight, Usyk was undisputed cruiserweight champion. He won all four belts by winning in the backyards Marco Huck and Marius Briedis.

‘The Cat’ then defended them against Tony Bellew in the UK for good measure before stepping up to heavyweight and beating Chazz Witherspoon and Derek Chisora rather than take an immediate world title shot.  

Since he’s been gone, the cruiserweight belts have become fragmented and are currently held by Arsen Goulamirian, Ilunga Makabu, Jai Opetaia and Lawrence Okolie.

Fury has weighed in on Usyk’s latest comments and told Behind the Gloves: “He’s like a snack size, type of dude. Most days, I eat more than him at breakfast.

“While these guys are flicking each other in the face, I’m going bang, bye bye b****. I wouldn’t want to fight me either.

“These guys basically have to dance to whatever I say.”
